Jasprit Bumrah breaks former Indian spinner's 56-year-old record at The Gabba with six-wicket haul in first innings

This is Bumrah's second six-wicket haul against Australia in Tests.

India's premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah on December 16 scripted history at The Gabba, Brisbane. Bumrah became the first Indian pacer to take six wickets in an innings at the venue. He broke the record for best bowling figures by an Indian at The Gabba that stood for more than five and a half decades. 

The previous record belonged to legendary Indian off-spinner Erapalli Prasanna. Prasanna bagged six wickets for 104 runs from 33.4 overs in January 1968. India lost the match by 39 runs. Bumrah is now on top with six wickets for 76 runs from 28 overs.

The previous record for best bowling figures by an Indian pacer belonged to Madan Lal. In 1977, he took five wickets for 72 runs. Mohammed Siraj and Zaheer Khan have registered a fifer in Bribane as well.

Overall, Bumrah's bowling figures are sixth-best by a visiting bowler at the venue. The top spot belongs to legendary New Zealand pacer Richard Hadlee who took nine wickets for 52 runs in 1985.

On Day 3 of the Gabba Test, Bumrah achieved the feat with Mitchell Starc's wicket. Bumrah bowled from around the wicket and Starc edged one to Rishabh Pant. With it, Bumrah also became the fifth Indian pacer to take 50 wickets against Australia. The other four pacers are  Kapil Dev (79 wickets), Zaheer Khan (61 wickets), Ishant Sharma (59 wickets), Umesh Yadav (53 wickets).

Earlier on Day 2, Bumrah got the wickets of both openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney in the first sesssion. Earlier on Day 2, After Travis Head and Steve Smith scored their respective centuries to take the game away from India, Bumrah made a comeback with the new ball and dismissed both of them followed by Mitchell Marsh.

Meanwhile, Bumrah is nearing another milestone. He is nine wickets away from becoming sixth Indian pacer to take 200 wickets in Test cricket.
