Star batter Joe Root continued his astonishing batting form in the third Test match at Seddon Park in Hamilton, where he scored another half-century in the fourth innings as the Ben Stokes-led team attempted to chase down a massive target of 658, despite England's humiliating 423-run loss to New Zealand.
With a smooth performance of 54 and a 104-run partnership for the third wicket with Jacob Bethell, Root gave the visitors hope even though they were bowled out for 234 runs. The teenage player scored 76 runs to cap off an unforgettable first series in which he was instrumental in England's 2-1 victory.
Root creates history
Joe Root created history by becoming the first visiting batter to reach 1000 runs in New Zealand. With three hundreds to his credit, Root has amassed 1006 runs at an average of 50.30 in 22 innings over his 12 games in New Zealand.
Root also shattered the mark held by Javed Miandad for the most runs scored by a batter in Test cricket against New Zealand. While the renowned Pakistani batter scored 1919 runs in 18 games during his illustrious career for his country, the former England skipper has scored 1925 runs in 21 games against the Black Caps.
The accomplishment comes a day after Kane Williamson made history in New Zealand by becoming the first player to score 5000 runs and 20 centuries. In terms of Root, he ends the year with six hundred and 1556 runs in 17 games. In the history of Test cricket, his run total ranks seventh among all cricketers in a calendar year.
