England all-rounder Chris Woakes had dislocated his shoulder during the first day of Oval Test against India. This happened when the 36-year-old tried to stop a boundary, but ended up slipping and landed recklessly on his shoulder. He was visibly in a lot of pain and the physios soon took him off the field.
It was later revealed that Woakes had dislocated his shoulder and thus, was ruled out of the entire match. However, with England down to 357/9 while chasing down the target of 374, the all-rounder decided to come out to bat. Though the hosts eventually went on to lose at The Oval by a slender 6-run margin, Woakes' courageous act didn't go unnoticed and he even earned praise from some members of the Indian team.
Pant shared a heartfelt message with Woakes
Woakes has now revealed that after the match, India's wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant sent him a heartfelt voice note, asking him if his shoulder was ok. Notably, it was Woakes' delivery that had hit Pant hard on the toe during the Manchester Test, ruling him out for the remainder of the series. After receiving Pant's message, the England all-rounder decided to apologize for breaking the wicketkeeper-batter's foot.
“I saw Rishabh [Pant] had put an image of me on Instagram with a salute emoji, so I replied thanking him: ‘Appreciate the love and hope the foot is OK,’ etc. He then sent me a voice note saying: ‘I hope all is OK, good luck with the recovery and I hope we meet again out there some day.’ I obviously said sorry for the broken foot," Woakes told The Guardian.
Woakes also revealed that he felt 'horrible' after dislocating his shoulder and added that he even thought that his career may very well be over due to the serious injury.
“The outfield was wet from the rain, almost greasy, and my hand slipped as I landed and my full body weight went through my shoulder. I heard a pop and knew I was in trouble," Woakes stated.
“The pain came on pretty quickly and my arm was just hanging there. It was grim and my thoughts were racing. ‘Is it game over? Is it career done?’ It was a horrible place to be. We got it into a makeshift sling with my jumper and got off the field," he added.
Meanwhile, the dislocated shoulder may very well rule out Woakes from the Ashes as well which is set to commence later this year in November. The five-match Test series between England and Australia will be highly important for both the teams and the all-rounder will be gutted if he misses out.
