Shreyas Iyer confessed that Indian batters failed to read the wicket after losing T20I series to Ireland

India suffered an agonising one-run defeat against Ireland in the second T20I

Indian captain Shreyas Iyer found himself at a loss for words following a shocking T20I series defeat against Ireland after losing the second match on June 28. The tour concluded with India agonisingly falling just one run short in the second and final T20I in Belfast. Although the Indian bowling unit had restricted Ireland to a manageable 154/8 in their 20 overs, a severe top-order collapse left the chase crippled from the start before late-game rain ultimately halted any chance of a recovery. The result marks India's first T20I series defeat since August 2023, coming as a massive surprise directly on the heels of their T20 World Cup 2026 title triumph.

We fell a bit short with the bat: Shreyas Iyer

The disappointing outcome brings an abrupt end to India's remarkable 16-series unbeaten streak in the shortest format, giving Shreyas and the team management plenty of areas to address before their upcoming tour of England. Speaking after the match, the stand-in skipper offered a blunt assessment of the performance, freely admitting that his side had been thoroughly bettered by the hosts.

Shreyas commended Ireland's professionalism during the post-match presentation, highlighting their superior understanding of the pitch conditions and their exceptional effort in the field. While he praised his own bowlers for executing their plans brilliantly to keep the target low, he noted that the batting unit failed to accurately read the surface and lacked the necessary urgency in running between the wickets, allowing Ireland to completely outplay them in those critical facets of the game.

'We fell a bit short with the bat. We fell a bit short in terms of analysing how the wicket is going to play," Iyer said at the post-match presentation.

India's rusty run chase

Talking about the match, Iyer won the toss and elected to field first. The decision allowed debutant Prince Yadav to immediately steal the spotlight, turning in a highly impressive performance with a three-wicket haul. Supported by Shivam Dube and Arshdeep Singh, who picked up two wickets apiece, the Indian bowling attack successfully kept Ireland's scoring in check, restricting the hosts to 154/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

The standout performance for the Irish batting lineup came from Harry Tector. His steady knock of 53 anchored the innings and provided the backbone for the hosts, ensuring they crossed the 150-run threshold to set up a competitive total. In reply, Indian batters barring Tilak Varma (55) failed to deliver and eventually fell short of one run in the end to hand Ireland a 2-0 series whitewash.

Reflecting on the match, Shreyas highly praised the debutant’s composure and tactical mindset on the international stage. The Indian captain noted that Prince's extensive IPL experience served him well in carrying that competitive momentum over to the national side. He highlighted that the young bowler not only brought his own clear plans and ideas to the crease but also carried an outstanding attitude and approach throughout his spell.

India will now shift their focus on the five-match T20I series against England, which is scheduled to get underway from July 1.
