Reportedly Suryakumar Yadav will be given the responsibility to lead India in T20I series against Sri Lanka.

However, big responsibility came with a warning by BCCI.

The question of who will lead India's T20I team has been a hot topic among cricket fans ever since Rohit Sharma's retirement from the format after their T20 World Cup title triumph. Naturally, Hardik Pandya, the team's vice-captain, was considered the frontrunner to take over the reins.

India's T20I captaincy, a twist in the tale

However, recent media reports suggest something else. It appears Suryakumar Yadav might pip Pandya to the captaincy role. Concerns about Pandya's fitness record have reportedly caused the BCCI and team management to hesitate. As a result, Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as the favorite to captain the team until the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Suryakumar takes the helm, but performance matters

Recent reports in the Indian Express suggest Suryakumar Yadav will lead India's T20I team, spearheading their preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup. However, his appointment comes with a caveat – his performance will be under constant evaluation. The BCCI clearly sees Suryakumar as a long-term leader, potentially guiding the team at the 2026 World Cup. However, the selection committee has informed the BCCI that they remain open to replacing him as captain if his performance doesn't meet expectations. This indicates Suryakumar will be on trial, needing to prove his leadership abilities on the field. Interestingly, the report also mentions that the selection committee and BCCI discussed their plans with Hardik Pandya, explaining their preference for Suryakumar. This sheds light on the surprising turn of events, considering Pandya's role as vice-captain during the 2024 World Cup and past experience leading the team in the absence of senior players.

Suryakumar's captaincy credentials

While Hardik Pandya's fitness concerns raise questions about his captaincy potential, Suryakumar Yadav presents a compelling case. He not only boasts a stellar batting record – currently the leading T20I run-scorer for India in recent years – but has also demonstrated leadership qualities. He successfully captained the team in the T20I series against South Africa and has even held captaincy roles with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

However, the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka might not feature Suryakumar. Reports suggest the BCCI is looking towards the future and wants to include Riyan Parag, a young batsman who can also bowl. This strategic move signifies the BCCI's focus on developing well-rounded talent.

Suryakumar Yadav's ODI record hasn't quite matched his brilliance in T20Is. This, coupled with past online criticism of his performances in the 50-over format, might contribute to his exclusion from the ODI squad against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer is poised for a comeback in the ODIs. His previous disciplinary issues led to his removal from the BCCI's annual contract, but his return to international cricket paves the way for potential reinstatement.
