Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) batters surrendered against Mumbai Indians (MI) as they registered their second-lowest total in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL). At Wankhede Stadium, CSK were bundled out for 97 in their must-win clash against Rohit Sharma-led side.

Coincidentally, CSK’s lowest total of 79 came against MI only. The MS Dhoni-led side was bundled out for 79 in the run chase of 140 in the 2013 edition of IPL.

This is the second time four-time IPL-winning side has been bundled out for less than 100.

The collapse was triggered by an umpiring blunder. Devon Conway was wrongly adjudged LBW by the umpire. Conway could not use the Decision Review System (DRS) either as it was not available due to power cut. Daniel Sams was outstanding with the new ball as he got the wicket of Moeen Ali in the same over.

Jasprit Bumrah joined the party as well with the wicket of Robin Uthappa. Later, in the powerplay overs, Sams got rid of Ruturaj Gaikwad. Riley Meredith struck with the new ball too to remove Amati Rayudu. CSK were reduced to 29/5 inside the powerplay overs.

The collapse continued as Dhoni kept on losing partners. Shivam Dube and Dwayne Bravo got starts but failed to string a partnership with skipper Dhoni who was left stranded on the other end. If not for Dhoni’s unbeaten knock, CSK would have registered their lowest ever IPL total.

The CSK skipper scored 36 runs from 33 deliveries including four fours and two sixes. The CSK tail did not wag either as their innings was wrapped up with four overs to go.

Sams was sensational as he conceded just 16 runs to take three wickets. Meredith, Kumar Kartikeya got two wickets each whereas Bumrah and Ramandeep Singh had one wicket each in their name. The last wicket was a run out of Mukesh Choudhary by wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan.
