With the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions around the corner, teams are rolling their sleeves for one final push to get their favourite choice of players. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) though will have to go one better in the weekend auctions as they also try to get someone who can lead the side. However, former India player and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star Ajit Agarkar has suggested that RCB management should reconsider their decision and reappoint Virat Kohli as the captain of the franchise.

“If Virat Kohli can take over the captaincy and if he is happy to do it and if he has the energy to do it, I think that will be the easiest solution for them. At the end of the day, we have seen RCB over the years they haven’t invested enough money in making a proper team of 12, 13, or 14 players with enough depth,” Agarkar said in on Star Sports in an IPL auction special program.

Now, the former India captain, Kohli has a very proud record of leading the side in the shortest format having won 64 of his 140 IPL matches. He was captain of the side from 2011 to 2021 and recently resigned as the skipper after RCB were unable to clinch the trophy. According to Agarkar, the Delhi-born batter is the right choice with whom the management can go as he has a proven track record. Only MS Dhoni has played more matches as a captain (204) and won more matches (121).

“It’s always been dependent on the top three, not enough middle order players and if you don’t have the money, you can’t do that again.

“So, if you break the bank for one player, doesn’t matter how good he is – will win you games but will never win you competitions,” Agarkar added.

Kohli's inability to win major tournaments might be a worry for the RCB; he led the Bangalore-based franchise to the final of the 2011 and 2016 edition of the IPL but ended as second-best. The 2016 edition was also a memorable season for Kohli on personal terms as he scored a mammoth 973 runs in 16 IPL matches.

The IPL auctions will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13 as RCB try to get a player with a proven pedigree. The likes of Eoin Morgan, David Warner and Jason Holder are all part of the auctions where the RCB scouts will keep a close eye on.
