In a significant development, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) appointed former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson as an assistant coach for the upcoming edition of the IPL 2022. Former India batsman, Praveen Amre, will continue to work as another assistant coach of the Delhi Capitals team.
Watson's involvement
The 40-year-old former Australia all-rounder had last played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in IPL and after playing the IPL 2020 edition he retired from the league. His last IPL match was against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, on October 29, in 2020.
It is important to mention that the Delhi Capitals franchise had previously separated their ties with former India cricketers Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra, the assistant coaches from last season.
In the history of IPL, Watson has been a prominent name and showcased his terrific all-round abilities. In IPL, Watson had notched 3874 runs at an average of 30.99. The right-handed all-rounder notched 21 half centuries in the history of Indian Premier League.
In the bowling department as well he did a terrific job as he had picked up 92 wickets at an economy rate of 7.93.
Players retained
Ahead of the 2022 mega IPL auction for the 15th edition of IPL, Delhi Capitals had decided to retain four players and they were- Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant for Rs 16 crore, Indian all-rounder Axar Patel for Rs 9 crore, Indian batter Prithvi Shaw for Rs 7.5 crore and South Africa pacer Anrich Nortje Rs 6.5 crore.
Pant is expected to lead the Delhi-based franchise in the 15th edition of Indian Premier League.
In the mega auction for the IPL 2022, Delhi Capitals had spent a huge amount of Rs 10.75 crore for Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur.
With the addition of two new teams (Ahmedabad and Lucknow), the upcoming edition of IPL will have 10 teams vying for the prestigious trophy.
