Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar is likely to miss a minimum of two matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) after suffering split webbing in his bowling hand, head coach Tom Moody confirmed on Monday (April 11). The injury took place during the Orange Army's second consecutive victory in this campaign, which was an eight-wicket win over Gujarat Titans (GT).
A disciplined bowling effort followed by skipper Kane Williamson's half-century helped SRH beat the Titans by eight wickets at the DY Patil Stadium on Monday night. During the match, however, Sundar injured himself and was unable to bowl his full quota of overs. His three wicketless overs - two of which were in the powerplay - went for just 14 runs.
"Washington has torn the webbing in his right hand, between his thumb and first finger. We must monitor that over the next two-three days. Hopefully, it isn't a significant blow. I'd imagine it'd take probably a week or so to settle down," SRH coach Moody said after the win.
Their next two outings will see SRH take on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday, April 15, and then Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday, April 17.
Having joined SRH during the IPL mega auction for Rs 8.75 crores, the all-rounder who last played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has been Hyderabad's lone specialist tweaker so far this season.
After a dismal start in their opening match, where Sundar gave away 47 runs in three overs, without taking a wicket against Rajasthan Royals (RR), the 22-year-old has picked up four wickets for 63 runs in the next three matches.
Sundar missed India's three T20Is against West Indies in February after suffering a hamstring injury while fielding during the third ODI in Ahmedabad. He has had his fair share of injuries and illnesses. keeping him out of action for the last few months.
He also missed the second half of IPL 2021, which took place in the UAE last year, after hurting his finger.
Meanwhile, in some good news, the injury to batter Rahul Tripathi, which forced him to retire hurt midway through their chase against the Titans, was not a serious one. He fell to the ground right after hitting a six and needed medical attention as well.
"He's fine, he's just getting cramped. It's humid conditions and we get him to run to hotspots, so he covers a lot of ground in the first two-three overs. That is something we may need to look at to make sure we get the maximum out of him with the bat because obviously, he is a very valuable player for us," Moody said about the hard-hitting Tripathi.
