Big blow to CSK, Nathan Ellis ruled out of IPL 2026 due to hamstring injury, replacement search on

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a massive setback as their star pacer Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This injury is a major blow to the franchise’s strategy, especially since the team is still searching for a suitable replacement. The pressure is mounting on the CSK management, as Ellis was expected to anchor the bowling department after the bold decision to release Sri Lankan sensation Matheesha Pathirana prior to the auction.

Ellis originally joined the "Men in Yellow" during the 2025 mega auction for a price tag of ₹2 crores. During his first year with the squad, he largely served as an understudy to Pathirana, featuring in only one match—the season opener against the Mumbai Indians—where he claimed a single wicket. Despite his limited time on the field for CSK, his absence leaves a glaring void in a pace attack that was specifically designed around his death-bowling expertise.

Before arriving in Chennai, the Australian pacer spent four seasons with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) between 2021 and 2025. Throughout his IPL career, Ellis has proven to be a reliable T20 specialist, taking 19 wickets across 17 matches. Now, with their primary strike bowler sidelined, CSK must act quickly to find a replacement who can maintain their championship ambitions for the 2026 campaign.

“It is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements,” said CSK CEO K.S. Viswanthan to Sportstar.

While CSK are expected to announce a replacement for Ellis shortly, the franchise has not yet dropped any hints regarding their top candidates. As it stands, the overseas pace-bowling department features New Zealanders Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes. The management showed faith in the Kiwi pair during the 2026 auction, securing Henry’s services for ₹2 crores and bringing in the young Foulkes for ₹75 lakh. Adding further international depth to the squad is English pace-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton, who provides an additional seam option for the five-time champions.

On the domestic front, the squad led by Ruturaj Gaikwad maintains a solid Indian pace core. The roster includes the experienced Khaleel Ahmed, alongside promising talents Anshul Kamboj, Mukesh Choudhary, and Gurjapneet Singh. While these local options offer variety and skill, the team's primary challenge remains finding an overseas specialist who can replicate the specific death-bowling expertise they have lost with Ellis's injury.
