Former Pakistan's fast bowler Mohammad Amir has admitted that he is ready to leave Pakistan Super League (PSL), should an opportunity arise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Amidst the ongoing PSL 2025 season, the Quetta Gladiators' star has also hinted that by next year he will have an opportunity to play in IPL.
Mohammad Amir's sensational revelation on playing IPL
As both the current editions of the PSL 2025 and the IPL 2025 are underway, Amir is currently playing for the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistani tournament. The Pakistani cricketer, who retired from international cricket in 2024 and has since acquired UK citizenship, is poised to become eligible to participate in the IPL starting next year.
When directly questioned about his preference between the PSL and the IPL, should a scheduling conflict arise with both tournaments taking place simultaneously, Amir then came up with a straightforward and honest response.
“Honestly, if I get the opportunity, I'll definitely play in the IPL. I'm saying this openly. But if I don't get a chance, then I will play in the PSL. By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, then why not? I will play in the IPL,” Amir recently said in a conversation with Geo News.
Mohammad Amir had previously voiced his aspiration to be part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) dressing room, should he be selected in IPL auction in the following year. Now, Amir has clarified that his ultimate decision regarding whether to participate in the IPL or PSL next year will be contingent upon which league extends an offer to him first.
The Quetta Gladiators' pace bowler explained that once he is chosen by a team in either tournament, he will be contractually obligated to play for that franchise and unable to withdraw due to league regulations. Therefore, the determining factor will be the timing of the respective auctions or drafts. Amir will make his choice based on which league finalizes his selection first. However, he anticipates that a scheduling conflict between the IPL and PSL is unlikely to occur next year.
“I don't think IPL and PSL will clash next year. Because this year, the ICC Champions Trophy was everything. If I get picked in PSL first, then I can't pull off, as I will be banned from the tournament. If I get picked in IPL first, then I can't pull out from that league as well. Now, it depends on which league I get picked in first. If the IPL auction happens first and I get picked, then I can't pull off and will not play in the PSL. And if the PSL draft takes place first, and I get picked, then I can't pull out from the tournament,” Amir added.
Amir, who played a key role in Pakistan's title triumph in Champions Trophy 2017, has also elaborated on the reasons behind his most recent retirement from international cricket. Following his initial departure in 2020, he made an unexpected comeback to represent Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, shortly after the conclusion of the tournament, he abruptly announced his retirement from international duties once again.
Amir disclosed that he had relinquished his county cricket contract to participate in the T20 World Cup 2024 and had even personally covered the costs of his trainer and other related expenses. However, following the tournament, he stated that no one from the team management engaged in any communication with him or shared any prospective plans for his involvement in the future.
“A wise man needs no further explanation. If I’m not in the plan, then I have to think about myself. Now I’ve made up my mind — thank you very much to international cricket,” Amir concluded.
