In IPL 2025, the Lucknow Super Giants are undoubtedly but slowly finding their calling. They are starting to see dividends from their strategy of amassing commanding totals and giving their underrated bowling attack the luxury of a cushion. Tuesday at Eden Gardens was a prime example of that pattern, as LSG amassed a commanding 238 in their 20 overs and then maintained composure to defend it by four runs, securing their third victory in five games this season.

Mitchell Marsh continued his incredible run with a 48-ball 81, while Nicholas Pooran gave it his all, hitting eight sixes and seven boundaries for his 36-ball 87. On a spectacular pitch for the batters, LSG was able to post 238 after the two LSG hitters engaged in a struggle for the Orange Cap.

After wasting a fantastic chance to accomplish what would have been their most successful run chase ever—crossing the 200-run mark for the first time—the Kolkata Knight Riders had only themselves to blame. After scoring 90 runs in the powerplay with only one wicket lost, KKR continued to play aggressively into the middle overs. The foundation for a commanding finish was laid by captain Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer, who combined for 71 runs in just 34 deliveries for the third wicket.

Rishabh Pant on win over KKR

"I think when we batted we didn't realise it will get this close but after the powerplay we did. After the first timeout we went to the bowlers and told them to stick to the plans, not try too many things and do the basics right. That was very conscious (to slow down the game), when the game is going down at that pace you need to do something, it works sometimes and sometimes it does not work. (On promoting Abdul Samad to No. 4) We wanted to keep the right-left combination going. The back is fine now," said Rishabh Pant in post-match presentation.

KKR appeared to be in complete control when they were 162 for 3 in the 13th over. But thanks to Shardul Thakur, the game took a sudden turn. The medium pacer, who is known for his extraordinary ability to take wickets with deliveries that appear harmless, caused a collapse in the 13th over when he removed a well-set Rahane with a full toss. Ironically, Shardul was dismissed after starting the over with five straight wides, which clearly irritated his skipper, Rishabh Pant. Nevertheless, the breakthrough and final turning point in the pursuit came from the extra ball.
