Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to lock horns in Match 67 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday, May 22.
While both teams have already secured their place in the playoffs, the upcoming clash remains crucial in the battle for a top-two finish on the points table. Finishing in the top two gives teams a massive advantage in the playoffs, as they get two opportunities to qualify for the final through Qualifier 1.
Currently, RCB sit at the top of the standings with 18 points from 13 matches, while SRH occupy third place with 16 points from the same number of games. Gujarat Titans (GT) are second with 16 points as well, only ahead of Hyderabad on net run rate.
What happens if SRH defeat RCB?
A victory for Sunrisers Hyderabad would completely open up the race for the top two spots heading into the final round of league matches.
If SRH defeat RCB:
SRH will move to 18 points from 14 matches.
RCB will remain on 18 points from 14 matches.
Gujarat Titans will continue to stay on 16 points with one league game remaining.
The battle for first and second place would remain alive till the final set of fixtures.
Additionally, depending on the margin of victory, Hyderabad could significantly improve their net run rate, which may become a decisive factor if multiple teams finish on equal points.
A dominant win could even allow Pat Cummins-led SRH to challenge RCB’s net run rate advantage while also putting pressure on Gujarat Titans ahead of their final game.

Why top-two finish is crucial in IPL playoffs
The IPL playoff format gives a major edge to teams finishing in the top two positions.
The teams placed first and second on the table face each other in Qualifier 1, where the winner directly advances to the final. The losing team still gets another opportunity to qualify for the final clash by playing Qualifier 2 against the winner of the Eliminator.
Because of this extra cushion, all three teams — RCB, SRH and GT — are expected to push hard for a top-two finish in the closing stages of the league phase.
With momentum, net run rate and playoff advantage all on the line, the SRH vs RCB clash could play a massive role in shaping the IPL 2026 playoffs picture.
