MS Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu

Mumbai Indians batsman Ambati Rayudu (R) is stumped by Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni during the IPL match at The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 22, 2011.

Story Highlights:

Ambati Rayudu recalled hilarious conversation with MS Dhoni during CSK days.

Rayudu said that at Mumbai Indians, players were told to back their teammate when sledged.

Rayudu trolled RCB for having a go at MI players.

Former India batter Ambati Rayudu recalled a hilarious incident of his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) days. Rayudu has often lost his cool on the field and then-skipper MS Dhoni reminded him about it during their partnership in a humorous manner. He recalled when Dhoni told him to focus on his batting as he does not want to lose "Fair Play points". However, it was not Rayudu who cost CSK those points but Dhoni.

“Sometimes, Mahi bhai would tell me — just like a tin roof heats up quickly, I also tend to lose my cool quickly. We would point out to the umpire that a delivery was wide or a no-ball, and he would always tell me, ‘Just focus on batting, don’t raise your hand. I don’t want to lose Fair Play points because of you.’ Interestingly, that same year, he himself walked onto the field — not because of me, but because we were losing,” Rayudu said on JioHotstar's 'Cheeky Singles'.

Rayudu also took a dig at reigning Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as he described the environment in Mumbai Indians (MI) dressing room. The 39-year-old said that RCB tried to sledge MI players but learned their lesson quickly.

“When I played for MI, the entire dressing room had an unspoken understanding: if someone tried to have a go at us, three or four players would immediately step in to back their teammate. That’s why very few teams ever tried to take on MI. RCB, on the other hand, would go after everyone. Sometimes they teased me or another MI player once or twice, but eventually, even they realised it wasn’t wise to mess with MI,” Rayudu recalled.

Will Dhoni play in IPL 2026?

Meanwhile, there is once again a question mark over whether Dhoni will play in the next season or not. He is struggling with knee issues and will take a call on whether he will return for another season close to the mini-auction. A few months ago, Dhoni was under heavy criticism as CSK finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time.
