Mumbai Indians (MI) will continue to play without the services of their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah who is doing his rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence (formerly NCA) in Bengaluru. Bumrah's return to the side has been pushed further as his injury has turned out to be a 'bit serious' that earlier expected.
While Bumrah is fit and injury-free, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not want to hasten Bumrah's return to the field. As per a report by TOI, Bumrah is not expected to play all of the five Tests on the England soil either.
Earlier, it was expected that Bumrah will join MI camp in the second week of April. However, there is no timeline set for his return yet.
“Bumrah’s injury is a bit more serious. The medical team wants to ensure he doesn’t suffer a stress fracture. Bumrah himself is being careful. He is bowling at the CoE but it could take longer to get back in full swing. No definite timeline has been set yet, but one hopes he gets back by mid-April. Akash Deep too hopes to get back by April 10,” a BCCI source told the English daily.
Bumrah suffered a lower back injury during the Sydney Test and is yet to make his comeback to competitive cricket. He did not feature in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well.
MI register win in first home game of IPL 2025
Meanwhile, MI shrugged off two consecutive losses with a convincing win over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. MI pacers were clinical in their approach. While Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult did damage upfront, it was 23-year-old Mohali-born left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar who made jaws drop with a dream debut. The youngster took four wickets for 24 runs from three overs and registered best bowling figures by an Indian bowler on IPL debut.
MI are currently fifth on the points table as they boosted their net run rate (NRR) by chasing down a non-threatening target of 117 with eight wickets in hand and 43 balls to spare.
MI's next clash is against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 4.
