Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally ended their 17-year-long drought for their first win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk Stadium with an emphatic win over Ruturaj Gaikwad's men in their IPL 2025 clash on March 28. The last instance of RCB defeating the five-time IPL champions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium dates back to the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. In that match, led by Anil Kumble, RCB successfully defended a total of 126 runs by restricting MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings to just 112 runs.
Rajat Patidar led from the front and steered RCB to a strong total of 196/7 with his splendid knock. In reply, CSK were restricted to 146/8, thanks to Josh Hazlewood's fiery three-fer.
CSK were never in the game from the word go as they got off to a disastrous start. Josh Hazlewood made early inroads into the CSK lineup, first dismissing Rahul Tripathi (5) and then claiming the crucial wicket of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for duck, conceding a mere 6 runs in his initial two overs.
Aside from Rachin Ravindra (41), who offered some resistance, none of the other Chennai Super Kings batsmen displayed the necessary promise or intent to construct a significant innings in the run chase. Ravindra Jadeja also contributed with 19-ball 25. MS Dhoni did come out to bat and chipped in with an unbeaten 16-ball 30 but it was too late as a result, CSK's innings ultimately concluded at 146 runs for the loss of 8 wickets after their full quota of 20 overs.
Earlier, RCB rode on Rajat Patidar's batting exploits outstanding batting performance against the Chennai Super Kings in their Indian Premier League 2025 encounter. His aggressive knock of 51 runs, scored off just 32 balls at Chepauk, was instrumental in propelling the team to a total of 196 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. During his innings, Patidar struck 4 boundaries and cleared the ropes for 3 sixes, capitalizing on dropped catches to maintain his momentum.
Opening batsman Phil Salt also contributed with another aggressive innings, scoring 32 runs from 16 deliveries, which included 5 fours and 1 six. While Virat Kohli wasn't at his fluent best, he still managed to contribute a steady 31 runs off 30 balls, hitting 2 fours and 1 six in the process.
Devdutt Padikkal provided a late surge with a quickfire 27 runs off just 14 balls, smashing 2 fours and 2 sixes. Jitesh Sharma chipped in with a brisk 12 runs off 6 deliveries, including a four and a six. Towards the end of the innings, Tim David played a cameo, scoring an unbeaten 22 runs off a mere 8 balls, highlighted by 3 sixes and 1 four. For CSK, the standout bowler was Noor Ahmad, who claimed three wickets. His impressive performance in this match has propelled him to the top of the Purple Cap standings, now holding a total of 7 wickets from just two matches played.
CSK will next face Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30, while RCB will take on Gujarat Titans (GT) on April 2 in their upcoming IPL 2025 clash.
