A Punjab Kings (PBKS) star has suffered a major personal loss, as his mother recently passed away in a heartbreaking incident. The player in question is Afghan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, with his national teammates confirming the tragic news.
Omarzai, who is currently part of Punjab Kings in the ongoing IPL 2026, has been dealt a significant personal blow at the age of 26.
What his teammate had to say on the distressing news
Omarzai's compatriots Mohammad Nabi and Karim Janat confirmed the news of his mother’s passing and paid their respects through their respective X (formerly Twitter) accounts.
"We are saddened by the death of the mother of national player Azmatullah Omarzai. May Allah Almighty grant the deceased Paradise and give patience to the family. We share with them in these moments of great grief." Wrote Janat
While Nabi wrote, "I am deeply saddened to hear that the respected mother of Nawab Khan Umarzai and our national team player Azmatullah Omarzai has passed away. May Allah Almighty grant her soul the highest place in Jannah and bless the entire family with patience and strength.”
PBKS release an official statement
The franchise also released an official statement, expressing solidarity with the Afghan star and offering condolences. PBKS wrote:
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Azmatullah Omarzai on the loss of his mother. The entire Punjab Kings family stands with him and his loved ones during this difficult time."
However, the team has not yet confirmed whether he will be available for their upcoming match against the Rajasthan Royals, scheduled for Tuesday, April 28.
In his 16 IPL appearances so far, Omarzai has scored 99 runs at an average of 12.37 and has taken 12 wickets at an economy rate of 9.68. He has represented two IPL franchises, having previously played for Gujarat Titans before being picked by Punjab Kings in the mega auction held in November.
