IPL 2026: Klassen, Kishan power SRH to 34-run win as serial catch-droppers PBKS suffer hat-trick of defeats despite Connolly's ton

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured a commanding win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 34 runs in their IPL 2026 clash on May 6 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Heinrich Klaasen and skipper Pat Cummins turned to be heroes for SRH in a key clash against the Shreyas Iyer-led side while defending 236 runs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad's strong batting performance

PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first against SRH. The opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head got off to a flying start, adding 54 runs in just 3.3 overs. However, Abhishek was removed for 35 off 13, with the help of four sixes and two fours. Later, Travis Head also lost his wicket after scoring 38 off 19 balls with three sixes and three fours. Hyderabad were restricted to 84/2, before Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan took charge with a thunderous partnership.

Kishan and Klaasen bank on PBKS' poor fielding

After being 84/2, Shashank Singh dropped Heinrich Klassen's crucial catch when was on 9. Kishan also got a lifeline twice, first on 9 by Cooper Connolly and then 18 by Lockie Ferguson. SRH capitalised on PBKs' poor fielding. Klassen finished the game with 69 off 43 with three fours and four sixes. On the other hand, Kishan managed to score 55 off 32, with the help of two fours and four sixes. Banking on the strong effort, SRH managed to post 235/4 at the end of the first 20 overs. For PBKS, Arshdeep Singh, Ferguson, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Vijay Kumar Vyshak claimed one wicket each.

Punjab Kings' shaky start

In response, PBKS batter kicked off the innings on a disastrous note as SRH skipper Pat Cummins clinched a wicket in the first over, removing Priyansh Arya for just 1. The pressure mounted quickly as opener Prabhsimran Singh (3) and Shreyas Iyer (5) were removed quickly inside the powerplay. Iyer's dismissal turned out to be a big blow, as he mistimed a shot off Eshan Malinga directly to Cummins at mid-off.

Marcus Stoinis seemed to be a threat for SRH bowlers, playing a counter attacking knock that consisted of a big six and two fours in a single over from Sakib Hussain. However, his innings proved to be short-lived, as he was dismissed by Shivang Kumar for 28 off 14 after a great catch by wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan. By the end of the 10th over, PBKS had reached 91/4.

A defiant lone effort from Cooper was not enough to save Punjab as they crumbled to 202/7, succumbing to a 34-run loss. While Connolly tried to stabilize the innings with a valiant 107 off 59, the lower order collapsed under the pressure of soaring required run rate and a fabulous bowling effort of 3/28 from Pat Cummins.
