LSG vs SRH Today Match Results: Sunrisers Hyderabad dashed Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) IPL 2025 playoff hopes with a commanding six-wicket win at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on May 19.
SRH knock out LSG
Riding on Abhishek Sharma's blistering 20-ball 59 SRH chased down the 206-run target with six wickets and 8 balls to spare.
This was SRH's fourth win in the season, however, it was insignificant as they have been already eliminated. Meanwhile, LSG's campaign came to a screeching halt with their seventh defeat and with this their playoff chances got smoked in air.
SRH will next face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 23 while LSG will take on Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 22.
Having already been eliminated from playoff contention, SRH played for pride, while LSG desperately needed a win on Monday night to stay afloat in playoff race. The loss sealed a rather unremarkable season for LSG and their new captain, Rishabh Pant, who struggled to justify his record-breaking INR 27 crore price tag. Both Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad still have two more matches to play in the current season.
Abhishek Sharma's onslaught in SRH's win
A significant moment in SRH's successful run chase was Abhishek Sharma's aggressive assault on leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, hitting him for four consecutive sixes, with three of those shots directed straight down the ground. In the bowling department for LSG, the standout performer was undoubtedly leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi, who has enjoyed a remarkable debut season. When Rathi dismissed Abhishek Sharma in the eighth over, his signature notebook celebration ensued, but moments later, the competitive spirit between the two players escalated into a heated verbal exchange, requiring the swift intervention of the on-field umpires.
SRH successfully chased down the colossal target with six wickets and 10 balls to spare. Their charge was spearheaded by the explosive opening batsman Abhishek Sharma, who blazed his way to 59 runs off just 20 deliveries, including a sequence of four consecutive sixes against Ravi Bishnoi. Heinrich Klaasen played a crucial role in the middle overs, scoring a composed 47 runs off 28 balls. Ishan Kishan contributed a steady 35 runs off 28 balls, and Kamindu Mendis chipped in with a valuable 32 runs off 21 balls before being retired out due to a hamstring injury, though he had ensured the team's safety by the time he departed. For Lucknow Super Giants, the uncapped mystery spinner Digvesh Rathi continued to impress, picking up two wickets. However, none of the other bowlers proved to be particularly effective for the team.
Earlier, Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram's high-quality half-centuries, set a strong foundation for LSG. However, the visitors managed to regain control, effectively stemming the flow of runs and restricting the host team LSG to a total of 205/7.
Marsh (65 runs off 39 balls) and Markram (61 runs off 38 balls) were in sublime form during the powerplay, propelling LSG to a commanding position of 69 runs without any loss of wickets. Marsh initiated his innings with a powerful pull shot off his Australian captain Pat Cummins, sending the ball soaring for a six. Meanwhile, Markram focused his attack on the straight boundary against debutant left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey in the second over of the innings. Dubey, who had an outstanding Ranji Trophy season as the highest wicket-taker, was introduced into the attack relatively early, and the LSG openers strategically targeted the inexperienced bowler.
Marsh displayed his aggressive intent by clearing his front leg and dispatching Dubey for a six over long-on on the second delivery of the spinner's opening over. Markram followed suit in Dubey's subsequent over, hitting his first six of the match with another straight shot off the left-arm spinner. Markram was given a reprieve in the ninth over when he was dropped, making the situation more challenging for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, SRH finally achieved the breakthrough in the 11th over when Dubey returned to dismiss Marsh, who was caught at short third man, marking the 22-year-old's maiden IPL wicket.
This brought Rishabh Pant (7 runs off 6 balls) to the crease, with the under-pressure captain surprisingly choosing to bat at number three, ahead of Nicholas Pooran. Pant, who has experimented with various batting positions throughout the season with limited success, once again struggled and eventually offered a catch to pacer Eshan Malinga. In the crucial middle overs, from the 11th to the 15th, LSG could only manage to score 38 runs while losing two wickets, significantly impacting their scoring momentum. Pooran (45 runs off 26 balls), despite not finding the boundary with his usual ease, played a vital role in ensuring his team surpassed the 200-run mark. Interestingly, Nitish Reddy, bowling for the first time this season, was entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the 20th over, in which he conceded 20 runs.
