Shreyas Iyer got injured during PBKS IPL 2026 opener tie vs GT.

PBKS will face CSK in their second IPL 2026 clash.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer picked up an injury during their first match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans (GT) in New Chandigarh on March 31.

The incident happened when Iyer was at the non-striker’s end, and a powerful shot from Cooper Connolly struck his hand. He looked in a lot of pain after the hit, but he chose to stay on the field. After getting some treatment, he continued batting.

PBKS on Iyer injury

Ahead of Punjab’s second match against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai on April 3, assistant coach Brad Haddin shared an update on Iyer’s condition. He said that while there is swelling in Iyer’s hand, there is no fracture.

“No fracture, although there is some swelling. Shreyas is expected to play against CSK tomorrow (on Friday) though," PBKS Assistant Coach Brad Haddin said on Thursday.

Iyer is not just the captain but also a key middle-order batter for Punjab Kings. Last season in 2025, he was their highest run-getter with 604 runs in 17 matches. In the opening game this season against the Gujarat Titans, he scored 18 runs off 11 balls while batting at number four in a chase of 163.

However, Cooper Connolly anchored the chase for PBKS, scoring an unbeaten 72-run match-winning knock as the last edition's finalists defeated Gujarat Titans by three wickets.

PBKS vs CSK head-to-head

Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings have faced each other 32 times in the IPL so far, with Punjab winning 16 of those matches. The last time the two teams met at Chepauk, Punjab Kings came out on top with a four-wicket win. If Punjab Kings manage to beat Chennai Super Kings again on Friday, they will move to the No. 1 spot in the points table.
