Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer has been fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 opener against Gujarat Titans on March 31.
“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the IPL said in a statement.
GT's innings stretched for almost two hours. The wide reviews did not help them either. While PBKS were already behind the scheduled time (one hour 30 minutes) before the final over and were allowed a fielder less outside the 30-yard circle, Arshdeep Singh bowled an 11-ball over. He bowled the joint-longest over in IPL, featuring four wides and a no ball. In total, the Indian left-arm pacer bowled eight out of 11 wides in the innings.
Iyer gets injured
Later, Iyer got injured in the run chase. He was hit on the right hand by teammate Cooper Connolly’s shot. At the non-striker end, Iyer collapsed on the ground, wincing in pain. He got medical attention on the field before action was resumed. Soon after, he was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna.
PBKS won the game by three wickets with five balls to spare, credit to Connolly’s maiden unbeaten fifty on IPL debut, there is no clarity on Iyer’s injury. The skipper said that he is trying to be positive but a confirmation on his participation in their next game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is likely to be taken close to the fixture at MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 3.
