In an interesting turn of events, James Hopes who serves as bowling coach at Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been signed by Sydney Sixers as head coach in the Big Bash League (BBL). Notably, Hope is coming as a replacement of Greg Shipperd.
The Sixers signed James Hopes on a two-year contract after Shipperd was sacked from the position midway through his contract. The sacking came as a surprise, as Sixers managed to reach the final of the league in January 2026.

Meanwhile, this is going to be Hopes' first assignment as a head coach at any side. However, the former Australian all-rounder has served various leagues like BBL, IPL and MLC as a bowling coach. He was recently associated with Australia's domestic team Tasmania.

Following the announcement of Hopes' signing, Sydney Sixers' general Manager Rachael Haynes has thrown light on how Hopes could help the side to achieve greater heights in the coming future.

His depth of experience across Australian domestic cricket and international franchise competitions makes him an outstanding fit for the Sixers. We're pleased to welcome him into the club as we enter an exciting new chapter,” said Haynes
Opening up on his appointment, Hopes expressed excitement to join a side like Sydney Sixers which has an incredible history in the competition.

It will be interesting to see if James Hopes can find success in his new role at the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.
