Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar has provided a detailed analysis of the mid-season slump that derailed the Punjab Kings' (PBKS) campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The franchise enjoyed a dream start to the tournament, stringing together a phenomenal seven-match winning streak to put themselves in a commanding position with 13 points. However, their momentum came to a grinding halt as the Shreyas Iyer-led side suffered a disastrous string of six consecutive defeats. While they did manage to break the losing cycle and return to winning ways in the later stages, the late resurgence proved insufficient to salvage their season and secure a playoff berth.

PBKS more on process in first half and more on results in second: Tendulkar
Reflecting on their roller-coaster journey, Tendulkar praised the Kings for their initial brand of fearless cricket, while emphasising just how crucial momentum is over the course of a long, grueling tournament. He noted that during the first half of the season, the squad remained deeply committed to executing their core processes, which naturally translated into consistent success on the field. The turning point, according to Tendulkar, came in the latter stages when the players seemingly shifted their focus away from those foundational processes and became overly preoccupied with the final results. He concluded that this critical shift in mindset ultimately disrupted their rhythm and cost them a well-deserved spot in the top four.
"Punjab Kings brought wonderful energy to the tournament. Their cricket was positive, brave and often game-changing. Momentum plays a crucial role in lengthy tournaments. Eventually, in such a fast-moving tournament, it boils down to process and not getting attached to results. Punjab focused more on process in the first half and more on results in the second," Tendulkar wrote in a Reddit post.
In addition to his analysis of PBKS, the legendary batter reserved high praise for the Gujarat Titans, commending their remarkable consistency and unwavering commitment to their identity throughout the season. Sachin Tendulkar noted that the Titans successfully stayed true to their unique brand of cricket, refusing to let shifting circumstances or external pressures distract them from their game plan.
"What stands out about the Gujarat Titans is their ability to operate within a remarkably consistent performance band across an entire season. The IPL is inherently volatile, but GT rarely stray too far from their method, even when results fluctuate. They minimise both peaks and troughs, staying close to their brand of cricket more consistently than most teams. Over a long tournament, that ability to control uncertainty often proves more valuable than occasional bursts of brilliance or isolated match-winning performances," Tendulkar further wrote.
'The game demands constant evolution, and that is part of what makes it so fascinating to watch'
The former Mumbai Indians captain also emphasized that a strong start to a campaign does not necessarily guarantee a successful end to a team's tournament journey. According to Tendulkar, the IPL 2026 season was packed with several unexpected twists and turns, serving as a prime example of how quickly momentum can shift over the course of a two-month league. He noted that the tournament offered a completely different storyline on almost a weekly basis, constantly defying expectations. It was this sheer unpredictability and the rapid rise and fall of various franchises that, in Tendulkar's view, made the entire season so thoroughly fascinating for fans and analysts alike to watch unfold.
"Looking back at IPL 2026, I was reminded that tournaments are rarely defined by how they begin. More than once this season, the table told a very different story at the halfway mark than it did at the end. Teams adjusted, players improved, and new solutions emerged as the competition progressed. The game demands constant evolution, and that is part of what makes it so fascinating to watch,” the former India captain concluded.
