Vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer received an emotional and motivating message from Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan congratulating his team on their resounding victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad. Following their decisive 80-run victory at Eden Gardens on April 3, CEO Venky Mysore read out the Bollywood star's message in the KKR dressing room. Under intense criticism for his Rs 23.75 crore price tag, Venkatesh Iyer helped KKR achieve 200 runs, a total that was well beyond SRH's grasp, with a game-winning 29-ball 60. After failing to score in double digits in his last three IPL 2025 games, it was a moment of atonement for the all-rounder.
Shah Rukh Khan's message to KKR and Venkatesh Iyer
"Venkatesh, don't think too ahead. So just the time on the crease. That's where you belong," Shah Rukh said in his message.
A gentle reminder to stay in the present, Shah Rukh's letter commended Iyer's poise and cautioned him against thinking "too ahead" and to concentrate on playing with confidence and clarity. Iyer's performance coincided with growing doubts about his form and worth, leading some to wonder why the team had paid such a hefty amount to keep him.
During the post-match press conference, Venkatesh gave a humble response, saying that the most important thing is to help KKR succeed. Although he agreed that the innings had given him more confidence, he emphasized the importance of consistency in the upcoming games.
"You tell me if the pressure was released or not (smiles). I have repeatedly said this, once the IPL starts, it doesn't matter if your price is 20 lakhs or 20 crores," Iyer said post-match.
Prior to the SRH match, Iyer scored six runs against the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He was not given the opportunity to bat against the Rajasthan Royals. Critics were outspoken about the discrepancy between his output and price, but this most recent criticism has at least temporarily quieted the clamor. When they play the Lucknow Super Giants on April 8, KKR, who have won two of their last four games, hope to maintain their momentum. Venkatesh Iyer will once again be the center of attention as he attempts to put together a run of reliable performances for the Kolkata-based team.
