Shai Hope could in radar of some IPL franchises in the upcoming 2027 auction

Shai Hope has already struck two blistering centuries in the ongoing T20I series against India

West Indies captain Shai Hope has firmly put himself on the radar of several Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises following an extraordinary run of form in the T20I series against India. By smashing two sizzling centuries across four matches, the Caribbean skipper has turned himself into a prime target ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction, set to take place in Goa in mid-December.

Why IPL franchises will fight for Shai Hope in IPL 2027 auction?

Long categorized strictly as a traditional fifty-over anchor, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter has completely dismantled and rebuilt his modern limited-overs persona. By trading cautious accumulation for explosive boundary-hitting and effortless six-hitting ability, he has quickly evolved into one of the most coveted multi-format assets on the global franchise circuit.

His statistical output throughout this subcontinent assignment has been nothing short of extraordinary. The tour began with a dominant 50-over run where he accumulated 278 runs across three matches at a staggering average of 139, highlighted by a majestic, unbeaten 162 in the series finale.

Rather than cooling off, Hope seamlessly carried that ominous touch into the shortest format, opening with a brisk 52 before shifting into a different gear in Ranchi. There, he single-handedly dismantled a record 250-run target with an unbeaten 102 off just 50 deliveries.

He followed up that masterclass with an identical carbon copy during the fourth T20 clash in Hyderabad, once again walking off unbeaten on 102 from 50 balls, peppering the stadium with nine colossal sixes and four clinical boundaries to leave opposition tacticians completely out of ideas.

Shai Hope's incredible numbers on ongoing India tour:

Format Runs Scored Batting Average Centuries Key Highlights
ODI Series 278 139.0 2 Highest Score: 162*
T20I Series 250+ — 2 102* at Ranchi & 102* at Hyderabad
Total Tour 528+ — 4 4 Centuries across ODIs and T20Is

By reaching his third international T20 hundred, the prolific right-hander has carved out a unique piece of Caribbean cricket history, eclipsing iconic power-hitters such as Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis to become the first player from the West Indies to achieve the milestone. What makes this feat even more bizarre is his uncanny statistical coincidence: every single one of his three T20I tons has culminated on the identical individual score of 102 not out.

The most striking evolution in his gameplay is his seamless adaptability. No longer pegged down as a purely classical stroke-maker, he has elevated his scoring tempo to an elite level. Through immaculate reading of spin variations and a newfound knack for clearing the boundary ropes straight down the ground, he has rendered the hosts' bowling strategies completely ineffective.

In today's fast-paced landscape of Twenty20 cricket, franchises heavily prioritize opening anchors who can exploit the mandatory fielding restrictions without throwing their wickets away. The visiting skipper has successfully molded his technique to match this exact requirement. Functioning at the very top of the order, he reads early lengths with precision, dispatches new-ball fast bowling, and lofts the ball effortlessly over the infield during the opening powerplay.

Rather than relying on mindless slogging, his approach combines fierce early acceleration with the discipline to anchor deep into the innings. Carrying his bat through multiple century knocks proves he possesses the rare capability to ignite the powerplay while possessing the stamina and game-sense to seal run-chases at an extraordinary strike rate above 200. Combined with his sharp glove-work behind the stumps, he presents an exceptionally complete package that any franchise would love to acquire.

Despite his stellar international reputation, Hope’s IPL resume remains remarkably light. He represented the Delhi Capitals during the 2024 season, scoring 183 runs across nine matches at a healthy strike rate of 150, with a top score of 41. However, he found himself unsold in subsequent auctions, a tag that now looks wildly outdated given his recent evolution.

Former Australian star Kevin Pietersen and Indian legend R Ashwin have both noted that when the bidding paddles go up at the upcoming mini-auction, Hope will be one of the marquee overseas targets on every table.

4 IPL teams ready to battle for Shai Hope in 2027 mini auction

1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
Former India spinner R Ashwin publicly endorsed Hope as an ideal target for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While RCB possess top-order power with overseas stars like Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell, adding a consistent, spin-dominant top-order batter provides crucial depth.

"Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) could be an option for him because they have both Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell. Bethell batted reasonably well, but do they need to have another option there? Maybe, maybe not. So, honestly, should Shai Hope play in the IPL? Is he deserving? Absolutely. In my mind, he would be a number-one player. Will he be picked in this auction? He definitely should be, and I am hoping he will be," Ashwin remarked on his YouTube channel.

2. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
KKR have built their ethos around raw, unadulterated aggression. With dynamite top-order hitters like Finn Allen and Cameron Green, KKR can explode early but occasionally suffer from top-order collapses.

Hope represents the ideal solution: a high-volume run-scorer who can hold the innings together without slowing down tempo. His presence would allow power-finishers like Rinku Singh to enter games during the final overs to finish chases rather than conduct rescue missions. Furthermore, Eden Gardens’ fast outfield and true bounce perfectly align with Hope’s orthodox yet destructive strokeplay.

3. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)
LSG’s squad structure often relies heavily on Indian bowling, placing immense responsibility on their overseas slots to deliver top-tier batting output. While Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh provide firepower, both can experience hot-and-cold streaks.

Hope would offer LSG invaluable consistency. He could partner Markram at the top or complement Marsh’s power, acting as a master chase-controller, a quality LSG desperately need when defending or hunting down totals under pressure.

4. Delhi Capitals (DC)
A return to the Delhi Capitals could offer the smoothest transition. Having spent time in the DC camp in 2024, Hope is well-acquainted with the franchise.

DC have frequently struggled with top-order reliance on KL Rahul, leaving the batting unit vulnerable whenever Rahul falls early. Pairing Hope alongside Rahul, or placing him at number three, would share the run-scoring burden, giving the top order stability and firepower.

Shai Hope’s tour of India has been a defining chapter in his white-ball career. By dismantling India's bowlers on their home turf, he has erased any remaining doubts about his T20 credentials. Come the auction, expect a frantic bidding war as franchises scramble to secure the services of West Indies' multi-talented captain.
