Digvesh Rathi’s Controversial Boundary Catch: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder Rovman Powell openly said that the on-field umpires made a mistake by not sending Digvesh Rathi’s boundary catch decision to the third umpire. The incident took place during the IPL 2026 match between KKR and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Eden Gardens on Thursday.

The moment came in the second over when LSG opener Finn Allen was dismissed for 9 runs off 8 balls. At first, the umpires gave it out, and Allen walked back. But the decision was not checked upstairs. Later replays suggested Rathi may have been very close to touching the boundary cushion, although nothing was completely clear.

Rovman Powell on the controversial catch

After KKR lost the match by three wickets, Powell said the decision should have been reviewed by the third umpire. However, he also made it clear that KKR were not blaming it for the defeat.

“We feel it should have gone upstairs. In today’s game, even small calls are checked, and this was a very close one. Maybe it was a mistake, but we are not using it as an excuse,” Powell said after the match.

KKR had posted 181 runs while batting first and were in control for most of the game. LSG lost key wickets early, including Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant and Nicholas Pooran, and looked under pressure.

But Mukul Choudhary played a brilliant unbeaten knock of 54 off 27 balls and completely changed the game, helping LSG chase the target on the final ball with three wickets in hand.

Powell admitted the loss was disappointing, especially at home.

“We wanted Eden Gardens to be our stronghold. It hurts to lose here in front of our fans,” he said.

He also praised LSG’s young batter for playing a match-winning innings, saying KKR believed they could defend 181 but were outplayed in the end.
