Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer revisited one of the most talked-about moments from IPL 2025 second qualifier, his audacious stroke against Jasprit Bumrah. Reflecting on the high-pressure knockout clash between the Mumbai Indians and PBKS, Iyer noted that the success of that shot relied heavily on a blend of natural instinct and steady composure.

It was completely instinctive: Shreyas Iyer on incredible shot against Jasprit Bumrah

Facing a bowler of Bumrah’s caliber, renowned for his lethal accuracy and deceptive variations—is a formidable challenge for any batter. Discussing the technical and mental aspects of that encounter, Iyer shared insights into his specific thought process during that pivotal delivery. He explained the mindset he adopted while preparing to face Bumrah, offering a rare glimpse into how he navi

“It was completely instinctive. I was trying to hit him straight down the ground. That was the thought at the back of my mind, that wherever he bowled, I would target him straight. When you get into that position, your head is completely still and your body moves in a certain flow. When you are facing probably the best bowler in the world, who executes his angles and deliveries magnificently, you have to back your instincts. To play that shot and direct it towards third man while the field was in, I appreciated it as well,” Iyer told JioStar.

I didn’t celebrate because I knew we had to come back: Shreyas Iyer

Iyer also shed light on his decision not to celebrate that specific moment against Bumrah. He emphasized that in the high-stakes environment of a crucial knockout match, maintaining emotional control is paramount. For Iyer, staying grounded and composed was more important than indulging in an emotional outburst; he prioritized keeping his focus entirely on the game at hand to ensure he remained prepared for the next delivery.

Under Iyer’s captaincy, PBKS have experienced a massive turnaround, reaching the IPL final in 2025, their first such appearance since 2014. The team has carried this positive trajectory into the 2026 season, boasting a brilliant start with five wins in their opening six fixtures. With the franchise still chasing its elusive maiden title, there is a clear determination within the squad to make this season count and finally secure the trophy.

“I didn’t celebrate because I knew we had to come back and play there again after a day. If you show emotions, your heart rate goes up and down. Once you are in control of your emotions, you can be very clear in your mindset and decisive about the main goal,” Iyer concluded.
