Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer scolded Shashank after the match.

Shashank remained unbeaten for 61 off 30 balls in the 6-run defeat in IPL 2025 final.

Punjab Kings' (PBKS) designated finisher Shashank Singh was on the receiving end of captain Shreyas Iyer's anger after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians (MI). The reason for Iyer's anger was Shashank's casual stroll towards the non-striker's end which led to him falling short of the crease when MI captain Hardik Pandya hit his target. Days after the video of Iyer scolding Shashank during the customary handshake went viral on the interent, the uncapped batter has opened up about the incident. He said that Iyer should've "slapped" him for his approach. he also revealed that his father did not speak to him till the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

“I deserve it, Iyer should have slapped me, my father didn’t speak to me till the finals. I was casual, I was walking on the beach not even in the garden. It was a crucial time, Shreyas was clear that I didn’t expect this from you but later he took me out for dinner,” Shashank told Indian Express.

Shashank's high praise for Iyer's captaincy

Shashank feels there is no better captain in world cricket than Iyer. He lauded the 30-year-old for his approach as captain, being open to anyone's advice even during the game.

"Whatever I have spoken to others and seen, there is no better captain than him in current times in world cricket. He gives us freedom, he treats everyone equally. No one will say, Shreyas has an attitude. The youngsters in the dressing room find him to be a chill bandaa. Shreyas is the only captain, who has told us that if anyone has any suggestion during the game, he can come and convey it to him. If he feels it’s the right advice, he will take it. It’s rare,” Shashank said.

While Iyer took MI over the line after Shashank's faux pas with an unbeaten 41-ball 87, he lost his wicket to Romario Shepherd in the final for just one run. On the other hand, Shashank scored just two runs in the Qualifier 2 but remained unbeaten for 61 off 30 balls. However, he could not take his team over the line as PBKS needed 29 runs off the final over and Shashank scored 22. He has promised to get PBKS over the line in the next edition.
