Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has candidly addressed the growing criticism surrounding his team's performance in IPL 2026, describing the flak as appropriate given their current form. Acknowledging that the five-time champions are in a difficult position, Fleming said that the squad must intensify their efforts and discover a viable path forward. His comments reflect the urgency within the camp as they desperately search for a breakthrough victory to halt their downward slide in the standings.
We just have to work harder: Fleming on CSK's criticism
In response to the scrutiny over the team's inconsistent play, Fleming noted that while external perceptions are inevitably dictated by match results, such pressure is an inherent part of the job. He maintained that the responsibility of the role involves managing these expectations, even when the outcomes on the field are not meeting the franchise's high standards.

To regain their competitive edge, Fleming highlighted that the primary objective for CSK is to accelerate the sense of cohesion within the playing group. He pointed to recent fixtures as evidence that the team remains capable of competing at a high level, noting that they have stayed in contention until the final moments of several narrow defeats. The veteran coach believes that if the squad can bridge the small gaps in performance, they can turn these close losses into much-needed wins.
“Look, it is a really good sign that we are working very hard and we are well aware, I am well aware and the criticism is appropriate. So, we just have to work harder and find a way forward," Fleming said at the pre-match press conference.
CSK's torrid IPL 2026 campaign
CSK's IPL 2026 campaign has gotten off to a rocky start, beginning with a heavy defeat in Guwahati. In that fixture, the Rajasthan Royals controlled the match from the outset, handing the five-time champions a demoralizing eight-wicket loss. This early setback on the road made it difficult for the squad to establish any tactical momentum, setting a somber tone for the opening weeks of the tournament.
CSK will now take on Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 11.
