Gujarat Titans' Glenn Phillips speaks during post-match press conference in Dharamsala on May 26.

Story Highlights:

Gujarat Titans lost to RCB by 92 runs in IPL 2026 Qualifier 2.

Glenn Phillips hasn't played a single match in nearly five weeks.

Benched by Gujarat Titans (GT) to accommodate Jason Holder, New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips was left frustrated and flabbergasted at the same time as he was asked a ‘silly question’ in the post-match press conference. On May 26, GT were blown away by RCB skipper Rajat Patidar as he scored an unbeaten 93 to take the score to 254/5. Chasing a mammoth target, GT lost half the side for 51 runs and ended up losing the match by 92 runs in Dharamsala. In the presser, Phillips turned up despite not being part of the playing eleven since April 20. He was asked whether GT gave up seeing the target cross 250 to which the Kiwi all-rounder snapped at the reporter.

“That's a silly question. That is a really silly question. No one goes in there waiting to go, 'Oh, you know what? We're just going to give up on this one.' Why would we do that as professional cricketers? That's a terrible question," he said in the press conference.

"We went out there, we gave it everything. Unfortunately, when you're trying to chase 250, everything has to go right.”

GT continued to lose wickets and were 88/8 in the 12th over. Rahul Tewatia had support from Mohammed Siraj and he scored a 43-ball 68. Tewatia was dismissed in the penultimate over and GT were bowled out for 162 with three balls left in the innings. This was the second-largest defeat by runs in IPL playoffs/knockouts.

GT’s second chance to reach final on May 29

GT will now head head to Mullanpur where they will face either Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) or Rajastathan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2 on May 29. While it is unlikely that Phillips plays in the next match, he may be named as one of the impact player options considering GT’s ground fielding was poor in the match against RCB.

Phillips’ disappointing numbers in IPL 2026

Phillips wasn't at his best in the initial part of the IPL 2026. From six innings, he managed to score just 67 runs at an average of 16.75 and strike rate of 124.07.
