Dewald Brevis

Chennai Super Kings' Dewald Brevis gestures as he arrives to bat during the IPL match against Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 30, 2025.

Story Highlights:

Dewald Brevis has missed CSK's 3 matches in IPL 2026 already.

CSK played 3 overseas players against RCB.

Season changed, players changed but Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) lacklustre run has continued. Injuries to key players has hurt their campaign already with three losses on the trot. After the 43-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), CSK head coach Stephen Fleming gave an update on their star overseas recruit Dewald Brevis who is yet to step on the field amidst the team’s struggle in middle order after losing early wickets. Since CSK’s next game against Delhi Capitals (DC) is on April 11, Fleming hopes that it is enough time for Brevis to get match-ready.

"We hope he is going to be right for the next game. We have five days between the next game. We have been conservative and hopefully, these next five days go as well as we have planned, and he is ready to go. It's a big loss but we are looking forward to getting him back," Fleming said.

The Proteas batter was seen facing throwdowns for nearly 20 minutes from assistant coach Rajiv Kumar at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 5. Known for his attacking intent, Brevis was mostly defending but there were no signs of discomfort show by the batter. He also played football with his teammates.

Earlier, he had been training with the team and facing throwdowns in the nets along with fielding drills.

Brevis’ record last season

The youngster joined the franchise as replacement player last season. From six innings, he scored 225 runs at an average of 37.50 and strike rate of 180. He scored two fifties for the first time in a season.

If Brevis recovers before their next clash, this will be the first time he will be going up against DC. Once again, CSK will be facing DC at their homeground on April 11.

CSK at bottom, problems on top

Currently, CSK are at the bottom of the points table. Their top order is not firing. While Ayush Mhatre scored a half-century against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad have registered three consecutive disappointing scores. CSK are also missing the expertise of legendary MS Dhoni behind the stumps. They are lacking a bowler who can bowl at the death. Spencer Johnson won't join the CSK camp for at least three more games.
