RCB's Virat Kohli (C), along with his teammates, takes a victory lap around the field as he celebrates with the trophy after winning the IPL final against PBKS at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 4.

Story Highlights:

Virat Kohli lifted the IPL trophy after three losses in the final across 18 years.

Kohli got emotional as RCB beat Punjab Kings by six runs.

Kohli hailed RCB's fans for their continued support and his old mates AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle.

Under-19 World Cup? Check. ODI World Cup? Check. Champions Trophy? Checked and checked. Test mace? Checked. T20 World Cup? Checked. But, it was the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy that Virat Kohli could not have beside him for 17 years. He had staked his claim, came close a few times but it happened when Kohli had almost thought that the day will never come. But hope, grit and belief does strange things to a person. It may not happen the way you expect it to be but it will always happen the way it is supposed to. Kohli left it to the almighty and on June 3 it became a reality. After an emotional celebration, maybe all-night partying and some sleep, Kohli wrote a post on Instagram expressing his jubilation as if IPL trophy is a person who has finally acknowledged him as a person, as an athlete, as a legend.

"This team made the dream possible , a season I’ll never ever forget. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the ride over the last 2.5 months. This one is for the fans of rcb who never ever left our side in the worst of times. This one is for all the years of heartbreaks and disappointment. This is for every inch of effort left on the field playing for this team. As far as the ipl trophy is concerned- you’ve made me wait 18 years to be able to lift you and celebrate my friend, but it’s been absolutely worth the wait," the 36-year-old wrote on his social media handle and the post may end up being somewhere on top of most liked posts on the platform.

Kohli posted four photos. Two with the team on the podium, lifting the trophy and living the much-awaited moment. One with the trophy himself in a RCB t-shirt. Also, one with his RCB captain Rajat Patidar and vice-captain Jitesh Sharma holding the trophy together.

Kohli broke down in tears with his friend and former RCB AB de Villiers in the background after the final ball was bowled. He hailed De Villiers and Chris Gayle after the win, saying that the trophy belongs to them as much as it does to him. He also promised a parade in Bengaluru to celebrate the title win.
