New Zealand's cricket team will be without Daryl Mitchell for the second Test against South Africa in Hamilton, as well as the forthcoming T20Is series against Australia, due to a foot injury. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has opted to exclude Mitchell from the lineup, allowing him sufficient time for recovery. This decision follows his absence from the final T20I against Pakistan and missing the Super Smash Final where Canterbury faced Auckland, due to the same injury.

Mitchell made a comeback in the first Test against South Africa held at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, contributing scores of 34 and an unbeaten 11. Despite his participation, Mitchell continued to feel discomfort from his injury, prompting NZC to prioritize his long-term fitness and extend his rehabilitation period.

NZ coach explains reason behind the decision

Gary Stead, the head coach of the Black Caps, mentioned that the decision to rest Mitchell was made with the upcoming Test series against Australia in mind, which is set to commence on February 29. While New Zealand has yet to announce a direct replacement for Mitchell, Will Young is expected to fill his spot in the playing eleven.

"We took the opportunity to rest him a little earlier but after seeking medical advice on this as well it's likely that he needs a longer period of time," Stead said in a press release.

"It's really tough, because there's not a lot breaks coming up in the next week while so thought this gives us nearly three weeks to try and give him the chance of the best recuperation from it.

"There's no guarantees this will still work in that period of time, but we are very hopeful that it will improve his chances of getting through a longer stint with us," he added.

Stead also highlighted that Canterbury bowler Will O'Rourke is under consideration for his debut. Additionally, former captain Kane Williamson is anticipated to be unavailable for the series against Australia, as he awaits the birth of his third child.

New Zealand, under the leadership of Tim Southee, secured a commanding 281-run victory over South Africa, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The team is now preparing for their T20I series against Australia, which begins on February 21.
