Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran fell prey to a bizarre dismissal during Ranji Trophy clash against Services

Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran opened up about the strange dismissal that ended his promising innings on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 clash against Services that left players and fans stunned.  Easwaran was batting fluently and looked set to score his first first-class hundred in more than a year. After Services chose to bowl first, he built a strong 151-run opening stand with Sudip Chatterjee and appeared completely in control at the crease.

However, disaster struck most unexpectedly. On the last ball of the 41st over, Chatterjee gently pushed the ball back towards the bowler, Aditya Kumar. Thinking the over was finished, and drinks had been called, Easwaran casually stepped out of his crease and started walking away.

What Easwaran didn’t realise was that the ball had brushed the bowler’s fingers and was still live. It slowly rolled back towards the stumps. The Services fielders appealed, and after a discussion between the on-field umpires and the third umpire, Easwaran was given out.

The Bengal captain was left stunned as he walked back to the pavilion, falling 19 runs short of what would have been his 28th first-class century, and his first in over a year.

“The innings was going really well, but the error I made surprised even me,” he said. “Some people may talk about the spirit of the game, but there’s no debate here. It was completely my fault. I thought the bowler had the ball and I just moved forward without thinking. Speaking after the day’s play, Easwaran openly admitted his mistake.

Despite being around the Indian Test setup since 2022, Easwaran is still waiting for his international debut. He was part of the squads for the tours of Australia in 2024–25 and England in 2025, but did not get a chance to play. He was later dropped from the squad during the home series against West Indies and South Africa.
