'This feels the right time for...': Rob Key explains why Joe Root was chosen over Harry Brook as England Test captain

In a series of interesting events, Joe Root was named England's new Test captain on Thursday, July 31, marking his second stint as the skipper of the side after stepping down in 2022. The Yorkshire batter was picked up for the role ahead of Harry Brook, who leads England in white-ball formats. However, Root's return as Test captain has not gone well among the experts.

Rob Key justifies Joe Root's appointment as England Test skipper

Amid the series of opinions on Root's second stint as Test skipper, ECB Managing Director Rob Key has revealed the key reason behind the board's decision to give the job back to the star batter instead of trying someone new like Harry Brook.

Key believes that it was too soon for Harry Brook to lead England in Tests and claimed that Root could be the best person to work alongside Stephen Fleming, who is the new Test coach replacing Brendon McCullum. While talking further, Key revealed that he had a long discussion with Fleming before reaching a mutual conclusion of naming Root as the new skipper of the side in the red-ball format.

“It’s just too soon for Harry Brook. This feels the right time for Joe Root. He has the chance to work with what I believe is the best coach that will complement him as well. Those two will be a great complementary pairing to take England forward. He is our best-ever batter, and now has the chance to captain the side without any of the stuff he had to deal with last time. I’m just so glad he gets that chance," he added.

While acknowledging the Harry Brook factor, Key showed faith on the rising young batter, saying that the 2027 ODI World Cup is around the corner and admitted that he will be the one to lead England in Tests in the coming future.

“You’ve got the 2027 World Cup, all of those things. At some stage, Harry Brook will be an outstanding Test captain of England cricket. It just doesn’t feel the time was right now," concluded Key.

What's next for England in Test cricket?

England's next assignment in Test cricket is a three-match home series against Pakistan starting in August 2026. After that, England will travel to South Africa for a three-match Test series starting in December 2026.
