India's premier spinner Kuldeep Yadav took a sarcastic jibe at Guwahati's ACA Stadium after India conceded 489 runs in the second Test match against South Africa. South Africa's Senuran Muthusamy and Marco Jansen made Indian finger spinners look ordinary in good batting conditions with invaluable lower-order contributions as the side seized control of the second Test by posting a massive 489 in their first innings.
Kuldeep Yadav on Guwahati pitch
Kuldeep was the pick of the bowlers with four scalps, but he conceded 115 runs in 29.1 overs. However, after the stumps, Kuldeep compared the 22-yard strip at the Barsapara Stadium to a "road" due to the benign nature of the surface.
"Kolkata ka wicket toh alag thaa. Yeh to pura road tha (Kolkata's wicket was different and this was a whole road). So it's challenging and that's why it's called a Test wicket," said Kuldeep in press conference.
However, Kuldeep did maintain that one needs to show fighting abilities to counter adverse conditions.
"It is not always about domination but it is also very important how you come back on a good batting surface. It was a difficult wicket for the bowlers because I didn't feel that there was a lot of help in this wicket."
India vs South Africa 2nd Test
Coming back to the second Test, Senuran Muthusamy scored a patient 109 off 206 balls, while Marco Jansen attacked the Indian spinners with a lively 93 off just 91 balls. The last four South African batters, from numbers 7 to 11, added an incredible 243 runs. Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne put on 88 runs for the seventh wicket, and Muthusamy then added another 97 runs with Jansen at number nine.
Jansen’s innings included seven sixes, the most ever by an overseas batter in India, surpassing the previous record of six held by Viv Richards and Matthew Hayden.
The South African innings went on for 151.1 overs, and it showed how much work the Indian bowlers had to do. All five specialist bowlers had to bowl more than 25 overs each, which is rare in a single innings.
Rishabh Pant’s captaincy lacked a backup plan, and the pitch at Barsapara Stadium didn’t help, as it showed no signs of wear and tear.
Kuldeep Yadav bowled differently from the opening day, bowling a bit faster and finishing with 4 wickets for 115 runs in 29.1 overs.
