Marco Jansen breaks world record for most sixes by a no.9 batter in Tests, equals Shahid Afridi's record vs India

Marco Jansen took Indian bowlers by surprise by hitting nine sixes in his rampant 93-run knock on Day 2 of the second Test in Guwahati.

South Africa’s bowling all-rounder Marco Jansen wreaked havoc at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. On Day 2 of the second Test, Jansen arrived at the crease in the second session and tonked Indian bowlers for sixes around the park. He broke the record for most sixes by a no.9 batter in Test cricket. He hit seven sixes in his 93-run knock.

The previous record was held by Zimbabwe's Andy Blignaut and New Zealand's Tim Southee. Blignaut hit six sixes in his 58-ball 61 against South Africa at Cape Town in 2025. Southee hit six sixes in his 49-ball 73 against England in Wellington in 2023.

Jansen also equalled the record for most sixes in a Test innings against India. Pakistan's Shahid Afridi had hit seven sixes in his 80-ball 103 against India in Lahore in 2006.

Jansen gets South Africa near 500

Jansen walked out to bat after Ravindra Jadeja got wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne stumped for 45. Jansen hit a six off the 10th ball he faced. Spinners did not pose a threat to him as he used his long levers to good effect, clearing the boundary with ease. He reached his fifty from 53 balls in the 136th over of the innings.

On the other end, Muthusamy departed after scoring 109. Jansen followed it up with two sixes off Jadeja in a single over. The controlled aggression from Jansen continued. Keshav Maharaj defended well and rotated strike as well. But, Jansen missed out on his maiden Test century as left-arm chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav got the better of him.

Jansen misses out on breaking Starc’s record

Jansen departed after scoring 93 runs from 91 deliveries. In addition to seven sixes, he hit six fours as well. It is the second-highest score by a visiting no.9 batter against India. The top spot belongs to Australia’s Mitchell Starc who scored 99 against India in Mohali in 2013.

Jansen also broke the record for highest score by a South Africa no.9 batter in India. Previously, the record belonged to Fanie de Villiers. He had scored an unbeaten 67 in Ahmedabad in 1996.
