Former New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder heaped praise on Shubman Gill for his terrific performance with the bat against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Gill, who was captaining the Men in Blue for the first time in red-ball cricket, shut down all doubts over him with a sensational batting display throughout the five-match series.
Gill finished as the highest run-getter of the series with 754 runs under his name from 10 innings, including four centuries. He was nothing short of a nightmare for the opposing bowlers in the five-match assignment and was thus chosen by England head coach Brendon McCullum as India's Player of the Series.
Gill won the ICC Player of the Month award
Gill was also recently adjudged as ICC's Player of the Month for July for his exploits in England. Ryder believes that the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy must have been a great 'learning curve' for Gill and the 25-year-old will continue to prosper in future red-ball assignments.
“There’s a lot of talent coming through, especially over here in India. There are so many people here. Shubman Gill is a young fellow. England would have been a good learning curve for him," Ryder said, as quoted by IANS.
The India captain scored centuries at Headingley, Edgbaston and Old Trafford during the England tour. His batting performance in Birmingham was especially incredible as after playing a magnificent knock of 269 in the first innings, the batter followed that up with a score of 161 on the second occasion, massively helping the Men in Blue in posting a humongous target of 608 for the hosts. The visitors would eventually go on to win the match by a huge 336-run margin.
Meanwhile, Gill will be hoping to continue his superb form in the upcoming two-match home Test series against West Indies which is set to commence from October 2. The Indian team currently sit on the third place on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table and will be looking to make more gains on the standings with the series against the Caribbean side, who recently suffered a 0-3 Test series whitewash to Australia at home.
