Story Highlights:

Dewald Brevis has not done well in the ongoing SA20 edition so far.

Brevis was not at his best in the T20I series on Indian soil as well.

South Africa's star middle-order batter Dewald Brevis responded to his criticism amid a lean patch in the ongoing SA20 2025-26. The Pretoria Capitals batter has managed to score 88 runs from seven innings, featuring a best of unbeaten 36. Seeing his lean patch, former Proteas opener Herschelle Gibbs wondered what input is he getting from coaches. Gibbs criticised Brevis’ ability to bat as per game situation.

“That does not bother me. If I think of those legends, or whoever they are, they are no longer playing. So yeah, it is their comments, so it does not affect me. I don’t even look at it," Brevis said while speaking to the media.

“I am enjoying it out here. I am hitting the ball as I should. I am all good. There is always outside noise, whether you play SA20 or whatever you play. So whether it is World Cup or whatever, it stays a cricket game, it stays a ball, a white ball," Brevis added.

Here’s what Gibbs said

“Would love to know what the coaches are saying to this Brevis boy , his not showing any signs of game management even though he’s played plenty t20s already,” the 51-year-old wrote on X.

Proteas batting coach on Brevis’ form

Brevis was not at his best in the T20I series against India. He registered scores of 22, 14, 2 and 31. Meanwhile, he has got the backing of Proteas batting coach Ashwell Prince dismissing talks of his struggles against the short ball.

“I don’t think Dewald has a technical weakness against the bouncer. It’s a case of choosing which deliveries to hit for six and which ones to just take a single,” Prince told Rapport.

However, Prince indirectly said that he expects better game awareness from the youngster.

“It’s a case of smart cricket, of good match awareness. You have to find a balance,” said Prince. “If you go out with six overs left and give up your wicket, then you’ve wasted six overs that you could have used to do a lot of damage. And then a new partnership has to try to build momentum again from scratch.”

Brevis will have a chance to get back into the groove against MI Cape Town at Centurion, SuperSport Park on January 12.
