Collapsed in Pakistan heat, Matthews returns to score 114 but suffers heartbreak as West Indies lose by 11 runs

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews suffered cramps, got stretechered off the field but returned to score a century in the run chase but it wasn't enough to help her team get over the line against Scotland  in Women's World Cup Qualifier. In Lahore, Matthews was the lone warrior for West Indies. She claimed four wickets to bowl out Scotland for 244. In the run chase, she ran out of partners and remained stranded on 114. 

In the run chase, it was in the 42nd over, Matthews could not take it anymore. West Indies were 203/8 and needed 42 runs from 51 deliveries. She was batting on 99 runs from 100 balls. After initial medical assistance, a dehydrated Matthews was stretchered off the field. 

But, in the next over, tailender Karishma Ramharack got out caught and bowled by Katherine Fraser. Matthews decided to walk out to bat again as the Caribbean side still needed  42 runs to win. She reached her half-century on the first ball she faced after returning to the crease.

Matthews left heartbroken

She got support from Aaliyah Alleyne who scored 13 more runs. Matthews looked to attack as well and the target was within reach. But, in the 47th over, her fears came true as Alleyne was dismissed lbw by Abtaha Maqsood. Matthews remained unbeaten for 114 runs from 113 balls, featuring 14 fours. She batted for three hours and 25 minutes in the challenging conditions of Lahore but West Indies ended up losing by 11 runs.

During the run chase, only four West Indies batters crossed the double-digit mark. Chinelle Henry and Alleyne struggled whereas Zaida James scored 45 runs from 89 balls.

Earlier, Matthews won the toss and opted to bowl first. She got the wickets of both openers Abbi Aitken-Drummond, Darcey Carter, captain Kathryn Bryce and Sarah Bryce. Sarah scored a half-century. Megan McColl's 44-ball 45 helped Scotland post 244 before they were bowled out. Apart from Matthews' four-fer, Alleyne and Ramharack took two wickets each whereas two Scottish batters were run out.
