South African pacer Dane Paterson stole his teammate Stuart Broad’s thunder by matching his 12-year-old feat of eight wickets for 52 runs in Nottinghamshire’s clash against Worcestershire at Trent Bridge. Paterson registered the exact same figures as Broad registered in 2010 against Warwickshire.

The only wicket Broad managed to take on his return to field after Ashes 2021-22 was of opener Jake Libby in his third over with the new ball. Then, skipper Steven Mullaney introduced Paterson into the attack as the first change bowler and it paid dividends straightaway.

Paterson rushes through Worcestershire lineup

Paterson got the wicket of opener Ed Pollock, who was looking to score quickly off the new ball. In his next over, he got the wicket of former Pakistan skipper Azhar Ali. Paterson continued to run in hard and got the wicket of Worcestershire skipper Brett DOliveira.

After the lunch break, Paterson continued to dominate Worcestershire batters and got eight wickets. In the end, Luke Fletcher got the 10th wicket to wrap up Worcestershire's innings for 159.

For Worcestershire, Haynes top-scored with 37 runs from 64 deliveries including four boundaries. Few batters got starts but none of them could convert it into a big total.

Quick fifties

In reply to 159, Nottinghamshire openers started off well. Opener Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed shared a 70-run partnership for the first wicket. Slater's innings came to an abrupt end as he got run out.

Hameed went on to score his half-century. He scored a 56-ball 53 which included 11 boundaries. Veteran batter Ben Duckett looked to score quickly as well. He scored 50 runs from 39 deliveries including eight boundaries before getting out to Dillon Pennington.

Quick wickets in last session

Joe Clarke and Lindon James were cautious but managed scores of 18 and 19 respectively. Skipper Mullaney registered a single-digit score whereas Liam Patterson-White got out for a seven-ball duck. At the end of Day 1's play, wicketkeeper-batter Tom Moores and Broad remained unbeaten for 15 and 6 respectively. Nottinghamshire scored 203/7 from 50 overs and took a 44-run lead.

Broad’s return

Broad was not picked for England’s West Indies tour along with James Anderson. The old duo is expected to return to the Test squad with Ben Stokes taking over captaincy from Joe Root.
