Maxwell steps down as Melbourne Renegades captain

Maxwell decided to relinquish his role as captain of the Melbourne Stars following a series of underwhelming performances in the 13th Big Bash League (BBL) season. This decision was communicated to his teammates after the Stars once again missed out on qualifying for the BBL finals, marking their fourth consecutive season without a finals appearance.

Throughout the 13 editions of the BBL, the Stars, along with the Hobart Hurricanes, have yet to secure the coveted BBL trophy. Maxwell assumed the captaincy of the Stars following John Hastings' retirement before the eighth edition of the BBL. Under his leadership, the team reached the finals in his first two seasons as captain but faced defeat both times, first to the Melbourne Renegades and then to the Sydney Sixers.

His performance this season was not up to his usual standards, with a total of 243 runs in 9 games, averaging 34.71. Despite this, he maintained an impressive strike rate of 173.57 and contributed 7 wickets.
