Shubman Gill resumes batting practice in Colombo.

Gill's return provides India a major boost ahead of first Test.

In a series of big updates, it has been reported that India's Test skipper Shubman Gill has started batting practice again in the nets on Sunday, August 9 after a finger injury forced him to miss the ongoing three-day warm-up fixture against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo.

Gill appears to have resumed his batting practice, with fresh visuals from Colombo showing the Indian batter facing deliveries in the nets. The pictures and clips are making rounds across all social media platforms while the rest of the Indian squad stayed involved in Day 3 of the warm-up fixture at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground.

Big relief for Team India

The news of Gill resuming practice comes as a major relief for head coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka on August 15. Gill is supposed to play a key role in India's plans throughout the two-match series. With Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan already on the sidelines because of injury concerns, another setback involving Gill would leave the visitors with an even bigger headache.

Must-win assignment for India

India have a little room for mistakes in the upcoming two-Test series, with wins against Sri Lanka crucial to strengthening their chances of claiming a top-two finish in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings and reaching the 2027 final at The Oval. Much of the responsibility will rest on Gill's shoulders, who has been going through a fine form with the bat in recent times.
