India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has opened up on losing his spot as an opener to Shubman Gill in T20Is. The 30-year-old had been elevated up in the batting order after Gautam Gambhir took charge as head coach last year and proved to be quite successful. Samson scored three tons while opening the batting last year, cementing his place in India's T20I set-up. However, he lost his opening spot to Gill following the latter's return to the format in Asia Cup and was made to bat at No.5.
Though Gill wasn't able to contribute much with the bat in the tournament, he still kept his spot as an opener for the five-match T20I series against Australia. Though the first T20I ended up being abandoned due to persistent rain, Samson shared his thoughts on the major change in his batting position before the commencement of the game.
“To be honest, I have played a lot of different roles for a lot of different teams. I have been part of this team for a long time now and have done different roles. I have opened the batting. I have finished matches. Now, I am batting in the middle order. Only the openers are fixed in this team. The rest of the batters have to be ready to bat at any time and in any situation. We are well prepared for that,' Samson told broadcasters.
Samson's performance in Asia Cup
Despite the massive change in his position, Samson's performance in the Asia Cup was not bad at all and he finished with a total of 132 runs under his name from four innings. He did register a 50+ score during the tournament and it came during the Men in Blue's group stage clash against Oman.
No result in 1st T20I
Meanwhile, the first T20I of the series between India and Australia in Canberra was washed out. After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Australia did manage to dismiss the in-form Abhishek Sharma cheaply for 19 runs, but got dominated by both Gill (37*) and Suryakumar Yadav (39*). Both of them looked set to score big knocks, but the weather ended up having the final say and the game had to be called off. Both the teams will be looking to get a positive result in the second match that will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on October 31.
