The slow over-rate penalty levied against the Pakistan team was officially confirmed on Thursday. Match Referee Ali Naqvi imposed the sanction after conducting a review which determined that the team had been four overs short of their required bowling target during the match on Tuesday, even after accounting for all allotted time concessions.

ICC noted that Pakistan's captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi, took full responsibility for the violation by pleading guilty to the over-rate offence. This acceptance of the charge allowed for the immediate imposition of the penalty without the need for a formal hearing.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka series rocked by Islamabad bomb blast

Pakistan secured a hard-fought six-run win over Sri Lanka in the series opener. However, the series was immediately overshadowed by a serious security event. After the match concluded, a suicide bombing occurred in nearby Islamabad, which left members of the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team extremely terrified. Given the unsettling incident, the Sri Lankan players reportedly expressed their strong desire to cut the tour short and leave the country immediately due to safety concerns.

The demand from the players put Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in a difficult position. The board ultimately issued a firm directive, instructing the players and support staff to continue with the tour as scheduled. To enforce this decision, SLC reportedly threatened those who wished to leave with a formal review upon their return. Following this mandate, and with security measures significantly beefed up by the host nation, the decision was made for the Sri Lankan players to continue the remainder of the tour.
