India all-rounder Washingtyon Sundar has broken his sielnce on the handshake controversy that took place in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja both scored sensational centuries on Day 5 as the Men in Blue pulled off a hard-fought draw at Old Trafford to deny the hosts from sealing the series. However, the final day of the match also caused a lot of drama and it all began when Ben Stokes offered the Indian batters to call it a draw.
But the duo of Jadeja and Sundar refused to end the match as both were close to scoring their centuries. This left the England camp furious and multiple players from the side ended up exchanging words with the Indian batters. Stokes even put in part-timers Joe Root and Harry Brook into the attack as a way of taunting the two left-hand batters. This move didn't do any good for the hosts as both Jadeja and Sundar soon reached their hundreds and it was then that they decided to call the match a draw.
However, Sundar didn't make much of the incident and simply stated that this is a normal thing to happen in not just cricket, but in any sport.
"I mean, it just happens in any sport, doesn't it? We've seen a lot of such things happen, not just in cricket, but in any sport. I mean, that's how sport is. It brings out a lot. I think it was just an experience for all of us, honestly," Sundar told Wisden.
The incident ended up motivating the Indian team even more
Sundar did end up admitting that the incident did fire up the Indian team a lot and iadded that it was the kind of motivation tghat they needed in a tough situation.
"One hundred per cent. You ask this to any player - that's exactly what you would hear. Especially in Test cricket, you want to be challenged because that's exactly what you expect every single day. And when the situation gets tough, the only thing that will help you get over it and come out successful is being really tough in your head," Sundar added.
Meanwhile, Sundar gave valiant contributions with both the bat and the ball in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The 25-year-old played in four Tests out of five in the series, scoring 284 runs and picking up 7 wickets. His highest individual score was 101* and his best bowling figures were 4/22. Sundar will be looking to continue this form in the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies which is set to commence from October 2 after the conclusion of Asia Cup.
