Laura Wolvaardt was named ICC Women's Player of the Month for October

Wolvaardt pipped both Smriti Mandhana and Ashleigh Gardner to win the award

South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt was named the ICC Women's Player of the Month for October after her stellar performance in the recently concluded ODI World Cup. Notably, Wolvaardt contributed immensely for her side with the bat throughout the tournament and played a key role in them making it all the way to the final. She finished with a total of 571 runs under her belt, the most for an individual in the history of the Women's World Cup.

Wolvaardt dominated in the knockouts

Wolvaardt also became just the second player after Australia's Alyssa Healy to score centuries in both the semi-final and final of the mega tournament. She first played a stunning knock of 169 in the semis against England before playing another monumental inning of 101 in the final against India. Despite her best efforts, the Proteas came up short in the final and lost by 52 runs.

Following her stellar batting display in October, Wolvaardt was adjudged as the ICC Women's Player of the Month. The 26-year-old pipped India's Smriti Mandhana and Australia's Ashleigh Gardner for the award and then went on to share her thoughts on receiving the prestigious award. She remarked that it is an honour to win after the team's phenomenal run in the World Cup.

“It’s an honour to win this award following the team’s World Cup performances in India, as part of a historic event for women’s cricket. The tournament featured outstanding matches and remarkable displays, which makes this recognition especially meaningful. While winning the tournament would have been ideal, we take pride in our victories and the unbreakable spirit we showed, while remaining confident that an ICC World Cup title is within reach. I appreciate everyone’s support, and I will always strive to make you proud on the field,” Wolvaardt said in a media release.

Muthusamy wins Men's Player of the Month award

On the other hand, South Africa's Senuran Muthusamy was named as the ICC's Men's Player of the Month. He pipped Pakistan's Noman Ali and Afghanistan's Rashid Khan to win the award. Muthusamy won the award for his brilliant all-round effort in the recently concluded two-match Test series against Pakistan that ended in a 1-1 draw. He scored 106 runs and racked up 11 scalps during the assignment.
