On May 11, Cricket Australia (CA) announced squads for limited-overs series in Pakistan and Bangladesh. For their first T20I series after the controversial T20 World Cup 2026 early exit, the George Bailey-led selection committee made several changes. The notable omissions were senior trio – Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis. Chief selector Bailey has addressed the snub, saying that the trio weren’t dropped per se and it is not the end of the road for them.
"It's not the end of the road," Bailey said. "I wouldn't call it dropped per se, but I understand that they're not within the squad. But certainly, just given where we are in the cycle of T20s and on the back of our World Cup result, it's a good opportunity, I think, to have a look at some different players.
“I'm not taking away the fact that every time that we take a team or squad away, the expectation and our expectation is that we will win and those players will perform. So it's a really important period of time, I think, for that T20 group to actually start to develop some different players in different roles across that.
"But that's not to say that it might be the last we've seen of those three."
While Maxwell and Stoinis are without a central contract after T20 World Cup 2026 exit, Smith was called in as a backup option to Sri Lanka and did not play a single game. Maxwell and Smith recently played in recently-concluded maiden Pakistan Super League (PSL). Both regained form but Smith did well considering he hasn’t played T20Is in over two years. Meanwhile, Stoinis has regained form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Maxwell had already said that he still wishes to play T20Is and has not plans to retire yet. Stoinis is yet to make a comment whereas Smith has expressed his desire to play in Los Angeles Olympics 2028.
MLC over Bangladesh tour?
There is also a possibility that the trio have preferred Major League Cricket (MLC) over three-T20I series against Bangladesh. The T20I series begins on June 17 and will conclude on June 21. Meanwhile, the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 begins on June 18.
It is to be noted that several players from the T20I squad also feature in the MLC 2026. These players are set to miss a few games of MLC 2026 for their respective franchises.
