India batter and Karnataka captain Mayank Agarwal is safe and will be discharged from the hospital in Agartala on January 31. He was admitted on January 30 after experiencing a health scare during a flight.
Mayank reported irritation in his throat and swelling on his lips after drinking water from a pouch on the flight before departure from the Tripura capital.
The Karnataka team manager Ramesh confirmed that Mayank Agarwal will arrive in Bengaluru in the afternoon. He also mentioned that the cricketer will be unable to speak for the next 48 hours due to ulcers and swelling.
The 30-year-old Agarwal was swiftly taken to a private hospital after being removed from a Delhi-bound Indigo flight in Agartala. Later in the evening, the hospital released a statement confirming Mayank's stable condition and ongoing monitoring.
Additionally, Agarwal lodged a police complaint in Agartala, alleging foul play.
Mayank was on his way to Surat for Karnataka's upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024 match when the incident occurred, having led Karnataka to a hard-earned victory over Tripura in Agartala's Elite Group C match, contributing with the bat.
WHAT HAPPENED TO MAYANK IN THE FLIGHT?
"We were about to take off, and Mayank felt thirsty. So, he drank water kept behind the seat pocket in front of his seat. After a few minutes, he realised that his throat was itching, and he felt the urge to vomit. Consequently, he rushed to the washroom near the cockpit and informed the air hostess," Karnataka team manager Ramesh told India Today.
"The air hostess immediately rang the emergency bell and checked if there was any doctor available on the flight. Unfortunately, there was no doctor, so the pilot was informed, and a message was sent to the airport authority. Doctors came to see him, and they said, 'We can't provide first aid here; he needs to be hospitalised.' An ambulance arrived, and he was taken to the hospital."
Ramesh confirmed that Mayank Agarwal will be absent for Karnataka's upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Railways in Surat from February 2 to 5. However, it is anticipated that the Karnataka captain will be ready to play in their subsequent match against Tamil Nadu in Chennai from February 9 to 13.
Tripura State Health Secretary Kiran Gitte mentioned that the Police have accepted his complaint and will conduct an investigation into the incident on the flight.
IndiGo, the airline carrier, released a statement without providing further details regarding the cause of the medical emergency.
"IndiGo flight 6E 5177 operating from Agartala to Delhi returned to origin due to a medical emergency onboard. The passenger was off-loaded and was rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance. The aircraft took off again for its destination at 1620h," the airline said in its press release.
