Former Pakistan captain Salman butt said that Babar Azam should have left the captaincy earlier as people were undermining him. Babar steps down from Pakistan's white ball captaincy on Wednesday so that he can focus more on his performance. Babar is going through a rough patch in his career
Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Butt said that Babar should focus more on his batting and it will be more valuable for the Pakistan cricket team also he is a great batter.
"Babar Azam has resigned from white-ball captaincy, and I think there's nothing to talk about it. I think he has done the right thing and should have done it earlier... People were undermining him, and it was a right decision from Babar. He should focus more on his batting and it will be more valuable for the Pakistan cricket team and also he is a great batter," Salman Butt said.
Babar was unable to win any major tournament for Pakistan under his leadership. He was appointed as the captain in 2019. Interestingly, Pakistan's only T20I win against India came under Babar Azam's captaincy in 2021 T20 World Cup played in Dubai, UAE. Babar-led Pakistan were the finalist of the T20 World Cup 2022 where England defeated them to win the title in Australia.
Last year Babar Azam-led Pakistan was eliminated from the Asia Cup in the Super 4 stage after a two-wicket defeat by Sri Lanka in Colombo. After that, Pakistan failed to reach the knockout of the ODI World Cup 2023 hosted by India. After the ODI World Cup failure, Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed as the T20I captain but was removed after just one series, in which Pakistan lost 4-1 to New Zealand.
Babar was subsequently reinstated as the white-ball captain, while Shan Masood remained the Test captain. Babar faced Pakistan's biggest loss in the T20 World Cup 2024 where they lost their opener clash against non-Test playing nation USA.
Pakistan are currently preparing for the three Test match series against England which is scheduled to start from October 7.
